COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

All courses are registered with Yoga Alliance for Continuing Education Credits.

YOGA SUTRA: CHANT + STUDY

Patanjalis Yoga Sutras define and describe the purpose and results of yoga practice. This text is rich with suggestions that influence our practice of this ancient tradition, and illuminates how our practice supports us as we navigate the responsibilities of daily life.

The classes will include traditional sutra chanting, presentation and discussion of important concepts and are suitable for inquiring students of all levels. Registered students will receive recordings of selected portions of the class to facilitate on-going practice.

SANSKRIT BASICS

Learn how to pronounce the sounds and read the characters of the transliterated Sanskrit alphabet. We will use standard international transliteration and focus on the process of speaking and chanting these unique sounds through listening and repeating simple sounds, words and phrases, and build to reading and chanting simple passages.

The classes will include chanting, presentation and discussion of important concepts and are suitable for inquiring students of all levels. Portions of each session will be recorded and provided to students enrolled in the series.

CHANT BASICS

Explore listening and chanting as an integrating experience for body, mind and breath. Brief  chants that are significant for our deeper understanding of yoga practice, will be selected from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, the Bhagavad Gita and the Vedic Tradition. These ancient texts are beautiful and inspiring, but it is the act of chanting itself that brings life to this study, as well as to the person listening and reciting.

The classes will include chanting, presentation and discussion of important concepts and are suitable for inquiring students of all levels. Portions of each session will be recorded and provided to students enrolled in the series.

SELECTED VERSES FROM THE BHAGAVAD GITA

The Bhagavad Gita or “Divine Song” presents the teachings of Yoga from different orientations and invites reflection on the purpose and potential of our yoga practice. These beautiful and poetic verses have a lovely melody for chant. In each class we will study and learn to chant unique selections from this famous dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna.

Classes include chanting, readings, and reflection, and are open to inquisitive students of all levels. Portions of each session will be recorded and provided to students enrolled in the series.
